The Christmas Shoes

There are a few different Christmas Shoes traditions. One tradition is that 'The Christmas Shoes' are the childrens shoes that are left out on Christmas Eve to be filled with presents or treats by the gift-bringer. Some children leave a letter to Santa in the shoe asking for the gift they choose, so Santa will know what to leave. Alternatively in Europe the child leaves grain or grass for the gift bearers animals.
In Greece some people burn their old shoes to prevent misfortunes in the coming year. In Scandanavia it is thought that if the family shoes are lined up side by side on Christmas Eve this will prevent the family from argueing in the year to come.
