Christmas Stockings
Now where did this tradition start? Well, it is said to have originated when “St Nicholas” provided dowries for three single girls. He is said to have thrown three pouches of gold down the chimney and they fell into the stockings handing in front of the fire to dry.
Making a Christmas Stocking
Simple and cheerful Christmas stockings can be made from bright, colourful pieces of felt. It is easy to sew of glue and, because the pieces do not need hemming, children can cut out allsorts of different shapes. They can make their stockings and decorate with small pieces of felt cut into shapes of hearts, stars, leaves, circles or faces. Glitter can be added for extra effect.
Make a paper pattern for the stocking shape first and use this to cut out two pieces of the shape from the large pieces of felt. Stitch a strip of contrasting felt to the top edges of the stocking and decorate one or both sides before sewing the two sides together. Sew or glue a loop to the top through which you can thread a brass or plastic curtain ring.
Tip: The stocking does not have to be turned inside out – it looks great right side out, particularly if you pink the exposed seam edge.
